Ridgeway Fox
The Ridgeway is an ancient trackway and is recognised as Britain’s oldest road, being at least 5000 years old. The Ridgeway passes through ancient landscapes, downland, secluded valleys and woodlands. It was extended to become a National Trail in 1972 and runs between Overton Hill (Avebury World Heritage site) and travels 87 miles to finish at Ivinghoe Beacon (Tring, Hertfordshire).
I settled on painting a red fox, as this iconic species is woven deep into the fabric of our natural heritage through stories, legends and landscape. The Ridgeway was a significant part of my childhood and so was the ever present but elusive red fox.
